Bushfire risk management in planning and building design

Client: Holmesglen, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Victoria

Achievement: Recommendations to amend existing units and develop new units of competency and learning resources to improve how bushfire risk management is addressed in VET planning and building design courses.

The project: The Royal Commission into Victoria’s disastrous 2009 bushfires identified the need to improve training for builders, planners and building designers to understand bushfire risk management and to mitigate bushfire risks. Working with an industry reference group, we identified relevant occupations, qualifications and courses delivered in Victoria.

We determined the most appropriate knowledge for each occupational group and analysed how effectively existing curriculum addressed the required competencies. We recommended revisions to existing units of competency, and new units, as well as learning resources.
