Strategic bushfire management plans

Client: Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning

Achievement: Working with teams of experts to develop world-first strategic bushfire management plans for all seven Victorian bushfire risk landscapes.

The project: The department's teams in three of Victoria's bushfire risk landscapes had undertaken extensive technical investigation and consultation to develop bushfire risk management plans, including fuel management strategies, for their landscapes.

We developed a template for a plan, and rules to use it, to ensure statewide consistency while allowing for some variability to suit each landscape’s particular circumstances. We then worked intensively with each team to build understanding and acceptance of this approach, and to help them use the template and rules to develop their own plan. After the first plans were finalised, we made major changes to the template and worked with teams from the remaining four landscapes as they developed their plans.

As a result, all seven plans were broadly consistent and were considered to be interesting, informative and understandable.
