Structural editing
Structural editing looks at the text as a whole. Will it achieve its purpose? Are the evidence and analysis it lays out complete, comprehensive and presented in a logical order? Are the key messages easy to understand? Have any sources of confusion for the reader been addressed? Do its parts come together as a quality statement of the topics it seeks to address?
We provide an independent, objective assessment of the draft and recommend improvements. We work closely with the writer to win their trust so the only changes we make are ones of which they approve.
Copy editing
Copy editing is at the language level. It happens after you are confident that the structure and content of the document are right. We review the whole document to make it clear, easy-to-understand, correctly expressed and enjoyable to read. We rewrite and polish to make every sentence, every paragraph, shine.
Although copy editing is somewhat more rules-based than substantive editing, we work closely with the writer so they review, understand and approve any changes that we make.
Proofreading
When it's time to cross the Ts and dot the Is, proofreading helps prevent embarrassing errors. We read the final draft carefully on screen or on paper and check that all grammar, spelling and style rules have been applied correctly. We also check that late changes have not introduced errors, that layouts or formats have not been upset during design or preproduction, and that the document is ready to be published.
